Spain will procure a total of 120 Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) Block 1A from the Norwegian company Kongsberg in a deal via NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) and worth more than 300 million euros. The deal had already been announced by Kongsberg back in December 2023, with now the Spanish Government revealing how many missiles are being procured and maintenance objectives.
Spain seeks to be able to achieve a maintenance level of D1 and D2 alongside its own industry, D1 is the ability to partially dismantle the missile between overhaul periods to conduct repairs, while D2 is the complete dismantling of the missile to conduct overhauls every 10 years.
NSM will replace the Harpoon onboard the F-100 frigates, with the Spanish Navy operating 5 such vessels. They will also arm the future F-110 frigates, 5 of them being on order to replace the ageing F-80 frigates.
