New Zealand selects Sikorsky MH-60R to replace the ageing SH-2G(I) helicopters

New Zealand has announced a 1.3 billion euro (NZ$2.7B) investment to replace two ageing aircraft fleets, one being its SH-2G(I) helicopters and the other its Boeing 757-2K2. These are the first major investments from the “Defence Capability Plan” released in April this year, in which New Zealand aimed to commit about 6 billion euros (NZ$12B) across the next 4 years for the modernization of its armed forces, all this on top of an increase of the baseline funding in the order of another 4.5 billion euros (NZ$9B).

New Zealand has 8 SH-2G(I) helicopters in service with No. 6 Squadron since 2015, having replaced the SH-2G(NZ) at the time. Next for the Squadron will be 5 Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, they will be procured directly with the United Stated via a Foreign Military Sale, instead a wider tender, the total investment is valued at about 1 billion euros (NZ$2B).

In service since 2003 at No. 40 Squadron, New Zealand operates two Boeing 757-2K2 aircraft, they are used to transport personnel and equipment. Their replacement are two new Airbus A321XLR on a six-year lease to buy costing about 350 million euros (NZ$700M).
