Germany signs contract with GDELS for 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles

The German Armed Forces Procurement Agency (BAAINBw) has signed a 3 billion euro contract with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) for the development and delivery of 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles1.

Previously known as Korsak, the now baptised Luchs 2 will be based on the Piranha 6×6 chassis, they will replace the Fenneck 4×4 reconnaissance vehicles currently in service with the army, which are expected to reach the end of their service life in 2028.

On the 15th of October the budget committee of the German Bundestag2 had approved a 3.54 billion euro budget for the development and procurement of the Luchs 2. On the same day a separate 138 million euro budget was also approved for the procurement of the MK 25 KBA 25mm automatic cannons that will equip the vehicles.

On the Luchs 2 GDELS states that3:

“The highly specialized reconnaissance vehicle system, which will set new standards in terms of autonomy and acoustic as well as thermal signature, features state-of-the-art, networked reconnaissance sensor technology, superior mobility, and assertiveness.”.

Lastly GDELS also announced that the contract for the Luchs 2 will also include simulators and logistical support services.
