The Eurofighter Combat AESA Radar MK1 is progressing toward its operational debut, with flight testing now underway on the Airbus A320 D-ATRA. Developed for Germany and Spain, the MK1 radar introduces enhanced detection, tracking, and electronic warfare features.
Today, December 18, 2024, the German Bundestag also approved additional funding to further support the ECRS Mk1 program. The additional funding will cover development expenditures for developing the radar’s electronic warfare capabilities. However, testing on the D-ATRA—formerly a civilian research aircraft operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR)—has been ongoing and remains a critical step in the radar’s development.
The MK1 radar is slated to enter service with Luftwaffe Tranche 4 Eurofighters, scheduled for delivery next year. This milestone will mark a significant leap in Eurofighter capabilities, reinforcing its role in the German and Spanish Airforces. The A320 D-ATRA, now serving as a flying testbed for the MK1, is also set to support testing for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).
Additionally, a Eurofighter in Spain recently conducted test flights equipped with the MK1 radar, initiating the system’s flight test evaluation. These tests are also part of the program to ensure the radar’s readiness for operational deployment.
Further updates on the radar program and its integration into the Eurofighter fleet are expected in the coming months.
